Minera San Cristobal S.A. (MSC) is a Bolivian mining company. Since March 2009, MSC is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Sumitomo Corporation, a Japanese corporation that is publicly traded on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
San Cristobal is a gigantic mine located in the magnificent Andes which stretch across the altiplano of Bolivia. The MSC San Cristobal mine is located in the province of Nor Lipez in the department of Potosi, approximately 500 kilometers south of the city of La Paz and 90 kilometers southwest of Uyuni.
The mine ranks as one of the largest deposits of zinc, lead and silver in the world. It is the third largest in silver output and sixth in zinc. The operation produces zinc-silver and lead concentrates with subsequent shipment to international markets, and is a stable source of imports of silver, zinc, and lead making an indirect contribution to a wide range of industries, notably automobiles, construction, shipbuilding, and consumer electronics.
In addition to the mining operations at San Cristobal, the company and its parent corporation are dedicated to enhancing and improving the lives of the local residents by establishing an infrastructure and paving the way to subsequent sustainable development. As part of the mining project, accordingly, construction is moving forward on roads, bridges, water supplies, hospitals, and schools. MSC not only complies with Bolivian environmental standards, but also with the ones set forth by the ISO 14001 environmental management standards and strictly complies with the labor legislation in force in the country and applies the highest global standards for the health and safety of all employees. The MSC health and safety practices also comply with the OHSAS 18001 international standards.
